SUMMARY Now on its third run, Fete dela WSK ! again breaks the boundaries of art and music by featuring innovative artists and experimental musicians from different parts of the globe alongside some of the Philippines’ most distinguished young and established artists. Fete dela WSK ! is a festival dedicated to creating a platform for artists who use sound and technology as their medium and their muse. Since its inception in 2008 as Fete dela Wasaque, the festival organized by SABAW Media Art Kitchen has had a particular focus around performances within the field of electronic and digital arts, social interactivity, and innovative music. Fete dela WSK ! 2011 comprises of events and activities that critically ruminate the odd relationship between space and the public through the exploration of different venues from the usual (pubs, galleries and museums) to the alternative (open spaces and virtual spaces). The intensity of the intervention is also expressed by WSK !, which comes from the Filipino word wasak which literally means “shattered” or “splintered.”

[Fr], Samuel Andre [Fr], Bottlesmoker [Id], Moeth [Vn], Kristian Kelner [Hu], Good Leaf, The Hermetic Order, Tad Ermitano with Malek Lopez, Gentle Universe, Wilderness, Slow Hello, Outerhope, Similar Objects, Manuel Nicolas Alvero, The Strangeness, Radioactive Sago Project, Bent Lynchpin, Kai Lam [Sg], Yuzuri Maeda [Jp], etc.

Exhibitions Other than concerts, we will also be having art exhibitions and shows in different parts of Metro Manila. They will include audio-visual sculptures by Kawayan De Guia (Philippines), Chitz Ramirez, and Lirio Salvador (Philippines) ; architectural installations by Denis Lagdameo (Philippines) ; sound-incorporated installation by Samuel Andre (France) ; internet-based art by Tatong Recheta Torres (Philippines), and Stéphane Degoutin and Marika Demineur (France) ; and many more.

Lectures and Workshops The festival will also be featuring lectures and workshops by both local and foreign artists (Lacanian psychologist Ian Parker, Media theorist and writer An Xiao Mina, Media activist Bong Ramilo, dancer and media artist Diego Maranan, and many more...), including talks at the Ayala Museum and Lopez Museum under SABAW’s Bedroomlab lecture series (circa 2010)—an informal art-tech-diybio platform, wherein open discussions, brainstorming sessions, lectures, network meetings, performances, hands-on workshops, demonstrations and public gatherings take place in people’s living rooms, gardens, laboratories, and other intimate spaces.

To kick-start the festivities to the public, on December 8, we will be having an exhibit opening at RONAC Art Center in San Juan, or rather, we will be launching the different interventions in the building’s spaces that Fete dela WSK ! will be organizing. We will then be having events in other parts of the Metro ; including M Cafe and Ayala Museum in Ayala Center (Makati), Light & Space Contemporary (Quezon City), Lopez Museum (Pasig City), Luneta Park (Manila), Terminal Garden (Madaluyong), Kanto Art Gallery in The Collective (Makati), Saguijo (Makati), and Blackbird (Makati).

PERFORMANCES

Microsaccades is a work by Black Zenith [USA, AU] for analogue modular synthesizers and moving images which uses dense sonic textures to generate live visuals through the transformation of sound into image.

For more than a decade now, Caliph8 has been active in the local music scene, the local hip-hop culture in particular but his interests extend to the visual arts—celebrating hip-hop culture traditions by merging his influences with other art forms. As a sound collagist and vinyl archeologist, he has a background in true school hip-hop, funk, soul, break beats, rare grooves, exotica, kraut rock, jazz, and psychedelia. [Photo by Brendan Goco]

Bottlesmoker, casio-pop whiz kids from Indonesia, Bottlesmoker is a take on the concept of bedroom music. They produce music in their own room, using custom toy equipment and keyboards, bouyant synthy up-lifters, noisy bit-crushed beats, composed and played on toys and keys.

EXHIBITIONS

Kawayan de Guia’s Bomba are bomb-shaped rotating disco balls suspended from the ceiling. Together with reworked jukebox at the North wing and a video projection, the suite of works crafts for us the mirages prompted by the mosaic of light, violence and play. These are projects of flight and phantom. Mirror bombs that fall from the sky, icons that flee and leap, characters that stand on the edge of light and dark, free fall and gravity, disco and the eclipse. Bomba, won Kawayan this year’s Ateneo Art Awards.

Garden of Ghosts is a multimedia installation. It involves the spectator as a shadow in an imaginary garden, between real and fiction. It was conceived as a questioning the notion of identity & intimacy in a world where everything is replaced by numbers.

Make_My_Day_ ! exhibition of Koto Nizna (Second Life Avatar of Tatong Sanchez), is the result of several months’ work of learning to build and script in Second Life, a result of Koto Nizna’s interest and networking with people (other avatars) "in-world" at the online virtual world, Second Life. The construction of this work (which included renting land, and building an online gallery) took a number of months and real finances in renting the virtual land and purchasing complicated scripts to enable everything to work together. The opening at Nova Gallery will be attended by lots of avatars from around the real-world which will include live performances by musician avatars from Spain, USA and Japan.

MELATONIN : Meditations on Sound in Sleep Curated by Lawrence English [Au] During sleep, a process controlled in part by the body’s use of the chemical Melatonin, our brain functions in a markedly different fashion to our waking life. As an example, reading is noted by many sleep researchers to be a quite unusual process, whereby words simply fall off the page, their graphical meaning abstracted as various sections of the brain recline into states of rest. Something similar is true for sounds we hear generated within dreams. The way in which incidental atmospheres complement, interrupt or interfere with our sleep suggests a new set of understandings. It is these concepts that are explored here in a deeply personal and reflective manner. BEDROOMLAB LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS

Marxism, Psychoanalysis, The State and NSK, by Lacanian psychologist Ian Parker, will discuss cultural-political interventions in Slovenia by cultural-political interventions by NSK (Neue Slowenische Kunst), also to address the question of the relationship between NSK and the work of the Slovene philosopher and political theorist Slavoj Žižek. The relationship between Marxism and psychoanalysis and the ways that differences between the two traditions of work play out in actual political interventions.

Marina and Ai : Social Media and the Global Art Dialogue by An Xiao Mina is a lecture about how the Internet and social media are opening the door to a more global art dialogue, radically shifting both the who and what in contemporary art. Focusing on two examples of social media in the art world—the response to the disappearance of Ai Weiwei and the response to Marina Abramovic’s recent MoMA performance—American artist An Xiao Mina will explore how social media is generating new, unique forms of creative dialogue and what this means for artists and arts communities globally.

WORKSHOP

Max/MSP. Max is programing environment created as a tool for artists to make live interactive works, it is a node based program. Users do not need to have any prior knowledge of computer programing. They will be able to create their own projects using live and prerecorded video, sound generation, synthesis and prerecorded sounds. The workshop will be three days long.
